Brad Keselowski is now at the top of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and his odds to win the Cup on Bovada are getting better and better every day.
Bovada’s Aaron’s 499 Betting Lines favored Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to win the race but Keselowski managed to avoid wrecks and fight the sweltering temperatures at Talladega. Ten cars were ruined throughout the day, and various car problems took apart drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman.
Keselowski won in arguably the most thrilling finish since the Daytona 500, hanging on for his second win of the year thanks to a big push by teammate Kyle Busch, who got his first win the week before.
“I knew the move I wanted to pull,” Keselowski said, according to the Seattle Times. Keselowski was the first driver in the last five races at Talladega to lead going into the last lap and win.
He now turns his attention to Darlington where he will try to pad his lead in the standings even more this weekend. That’s where bettors are focusing, too.
He’s won three times at Darlington and has never finished worse than 12th. Bovada hasn’t posted odds for the race just yet, but with a career finish average of 7.6, Keselowski will likely be near the top.
For Earnhardt, it’s just another disappointing finish despite a masterful handling of the track. It’s been over 130 races since his last win, but he seems to be so close to breaking through. After coming in with two second place finishes and two third places, Talladega marked his sixth-consecutive top-10 finish this year.
He seemed rather boastful going into the race, asserting he had as good or better shot at winning than any other driver, but took a more modest approach after.
“We just didn’t have a great car,” Earnhardt said. “We’ve got all the tools; we just really didn’t bring the best package here. Good engine. We have all the tools. It ain’t nothing anybody at the shop did. Between me and Steve, we can do a better job.”
Earnhardt’s ninth-place finish means there’s no reason to bail on him just yet. He just didn’t have the car to contend with all the messy accidents.
“I knew there would be a lot of wrecks [Sunday],” he said. “I didn’t have enough car to get up in there to stay ahead of the wrecks like we did [in the Nationwide Series race Saturday]. I just kind of had to play it a little too safe. It worked out, and we ended up getting a finish and not tore up and on the hook. I’m really happy with the team, and Steve’s doing a great job.”
Another name to look forward to this weekend, and it’s not really a surprise, is Gordon. No one is better than Gordon at Darlington with seven career wins and 18 career top-5s. Crazy good. He was gobbled up by all the wrecks at Talladega, but performed pretty well with an overheated engine.
